My Maker Portfolio

So, you found my portfolio! This page serves as a timeline for all my awesome projects and involvements from the past few years, displayed as small little pictures with a brief description. Hopefully it will give you a good idea of the kind of Maker I am, and the things I’m passionate about. Happy Scrolling!

The Green Thumb Project: 10/28/18 - 9/23/19

Backed by Mozilla Open Source Support (MOSS), this was a project I pitched during my time in London at MozFest. With the 5000$ Grant, I've created a modular, open source, greenhouse monitoring system based around the ESP32 and the Internet of Things. This project is designed to democratize urban farming by providing low cost solutions to upcoming greenhouse businesses and individuals looking to learn about smart farming.

Rocky Mountain Shrimp (Henderson Challenge): 8/24/19

What does one do with an old mining site in the Rockies and a couple million dollars? Grow shrimp of course! At least, that’s how my team decided to solve the Henderson Challenge! Our company, Rocky Mountain Shrimp, aims to grow humane, organic shrimp, right out of the heart of America!

Smart IOT Planter: 7/29/19

This project was a self watering mason jar planter, outfitted with IoT capabilities. It allowed you to control the planter from a web browser. This project was entered into the Micro-controller Instructable contest, and won Second Place!

Garmin Vibration Feeder: 7/22/19

Over the Summer of 2019, I had the amazing opportunity to work for Garmin’s automation department, as a Process Engineer. My summer project was to design a conveyor system using vibration technologies! I learned so many new things regarding assembly/automation, and I even made it to semi-finals in the intern project pitch competition!

MiniBike Build: 6/15/19

If there’s anything I like more than robots, it’s moving fast! I love building anything that moves, especially if it moves me with it! As a side project, my dad and I tore apart and rebuilt an old 80’s minibike. It’s actually pretty loud too.

BIG MOUTH BILLY BASS ALEXA: 5/12/19

I love Skyrim, it's such a great game, and it's in almost every platform. But I wanted to put that to the test. I wanted to be able to play Skyrim on anything. And I mean ANYTHING. So I set out to put Skyrim on a Big Mouth Billy Bass (with the help of Amazon Alexa and Raspberry Pi), and this was the result.

VR-CADE (SKILLS USA): 4/27/19

During Spring of 2019, I helped to found the AR/VR Club of Washburn Tech, which focused on teaching people about the industrial use of AR & VR technologies. As a part of this club, I led a group of students on a SkillsUSA Team, and took Gold! Our game revolved around VR revamps of old arcade games like Pac-Man and Duck Hunt.

BRaille Alarm CLock: 4/13/19

One day, I was sitting in my room and asked myself, “How do blind people tell the time?” I mean, obviously, they could just ask, but what if someone wasn’t around? This led me on an internet expedition, where I learned that blind people commonly just touch the hands of a clock! I felt like there had to be a better way, so I decided to design a digital Braille alarm clock.

Eagle Scout Project: 4/6/19

Before a Scout can achieve the rank of Eagle, he must complete an Eagle Scout Project. My project revolved around community improvement and city beautification, more specifically, restoring the central water shed that my hometown uses for crops & livestock. (I’m from Kansas.)

Make Magazine #68: 4/1/19

I got published in Make Magazine! You can find my project (APEX) in the last few pages of Volume 68 of Make Magazine! It’s just a small entry, but I’m very happy to say I was a part of something so integral to my childhood.

Thorson Honors Video: 2/24/19

Colorado School of Mines offers a first year honors course that revolves around design and leadership training, called Thorson Honors. As a part of the application process, we had to create a 60 second video demonstrating why we were right for the program. I decided to make a comedy sketch!

Update: I got accepted!

Atari Cartridge Game Console: 1/25/19

So I’ve done a lot of cool custom game console projects before, but I’ve always wanted to see how small I could get it. After the release of the Raspberry Pi Zero, I decided it was time to try and fit an entire console inside of a retro game cartridge. What game cartridge you may ask? Why, E.T. the Extraterrestrial for the Atari 2600 of course!

Chungus Clicker: 12/27/18

What originally started as a joke, grew into one of my biggest apps on Google Play (currently sitting at 20k downloads.) I designed a clicker app based around the popular meme, Big Chungus. I’m honestly impressed with how big this joke got. ;)

Google Science Fair - Tree Lite: 11/14/18

What if we could light the streets with a renewable power source while also scrubbing the air of excess CO2? That was the question I asked when entering the Google Science Fair in 2018. My answer? TreeLite. This system, comprised of an array of capacitors, a Joule Thief, and some other electronics, used power generated from trees to light an LED!

TIBBS: 7/15/18

Standing for Technically Intelligent But Basically Stupid, TIBBS is my car smart voice assistant. Based around a Google Voice AIY Kit and SEVERAL relays, TIBBS lets me control my car with just voice commands. It can answer simple questions and let me complete tasks like rolling down the windows and popping the trunk.

The Artificial Plant Emotion Expressor (APEX): 6/12/18

The Artificial Plant Emotion Expressor is a Smart Plant Monitoring Device aimed at teaching kids the basics of Arduino and Smart Gardening. I actually made a YouTube video and Instructable for this project that I'm very proud of:

Future Update: Progress on creating a custom PCB (APEX Integrated) is on its way, with the end goal being a DIY Learn to Solder Kit.

Bazaar: 5/28/18

Implementing an idea we coined “Peer-to-Peer Produce,” Bazaar is an app that aims to provide cheap, organic food to immigrants, refugees, and low-income families. Picture Craigslist, but for food. Unlike most marketplace apps, it ranks food by price, distance, and freshness! We also allow special features like bartering/trading, and weekly grocery lists.

The PiWatch: 4/7/18

I always wanted a smartwatch, but I couldn’t afford one… So I built my own! Introducing the PiWatch, a Raspberry Pi based, wrist mounted computer, sporting live weather data, some games, and of course, the time.

ARGlove: 3/18/18

What if we could touch holograms? Could a low-cost solution exist that works w/ Google Cardboard? I set out to make this possible. My prototype involved a glove with multiple track points, that then records the position of each finger in real space. Using this data, we can actually write code to allow us to “interact” with AR objects!

Makey Makey Joystick: 3/9/18

I had some leftover buttons/electronics from the Arcade cabinet, and a spare MakeyMakey, so I decided to create a USB Arcade Joystick!

AR Trading Card Game: 2/26/18

Inspired by the Nintendo 3DS AR Card Game, I created a puzzle based card game that featured interactive AR objects and creatures!
